NBA notes: Spurs getting acquainted

Things went from bad to worse to worst-ever for the Spurs, whose Big Three went to One in Friday's loss to Miami, which hadn't won in San Antonio in 10 years, with Tony Parker joining Manu Ginobili on the injured list.

In a timeout huddle with Tim Duncan, George Tolliver, George Hill, Desmon Farmer and Roger Mason, an ESPN camera picked up Coach Gregg Popovich joking, ''Who are all you guys?''

After the huddle broke up, Duncan stayed behind to introduce himself.

''Tim Duncan,'' he said, extending his hand. ''I've been here 11 years.''

''Yeah, I know,'' Popovich said. ''Play with these young guys.''

The Spurs canceled practice Saturday. Parker, two nights after scoring a career-high 55 points against the Timberwolves, was expected to have an MRI examination on Saturday.

The Spurs are 1-4 and off to their worst start since going 1-5 in 1996.

Parker will be replaced in the lineup by either rookie George Hill or 12th-year veteran Jacques Vaughan, a former member of the Utah Jazz.

McDyess in demand

If Antonio McDyess was upset at being traded to Denver with Billups to make the money work, there's now a bidding war for him. Cut loose by Denver after telling the Nuggets he wouldn't report, McDyess is now reportedly sought by 18 teams - there are only 30 - including:

* Boston: McDyess is 34 but at 44 he'd be an upgrade over Glen (Big Baby) Davis.

* Cleveland: Ben Wallace and Anderson Varejao average 15 rebounds and 2.2 blocks but only 7.8 points. Their defender is the one helping out on LeBron James.

* Detroit: The favorites in the clubhouse, in the old Brent Barry Turnaround.

Dumars has plans

Another powerhouse blew itself up last week, but there's a difference between the Pistons, the six-time East Finalists running who traded Chauncey Billups, and the Suns, who led the West at 34-15 last season when they acquired Shaquille O'Neal.

The Pistons' time was running out and President Joe Dumars wanted to get younger and play faster. Dumars plans to turn the team over to point guard Rodney Stuckey, eventually.

Still, the likeliest outcome is Iverson taking a pay cut to re-sign, keeping the Pistons under the cap to pursue one more big piece later (Chris Bosh?).

The Suns, who pioneered the new open-court style, went back the other way, getting older and slower.

Bulls Hinrich out up to 3 months

Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich needs surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and will miss up to three months.

The injury occurred during Chicago's 100-83 victory over Phoenix on Friday.

Hinrich, making his first start, was injured in the third quarter and left the game with five points, five assists and five steals. The Bulls initially called it a sprain, but an exam before Saturday night's game against Cleveland revealed a torn ulnar collateral ligament. The surgery is scheduled for Tuesday.

Paul leads Hornets to win over Heat

NEW ORLEANS - Chris Paul couldn't leave New Orleans' locker room Saturday night until he finished helping a friend with his tie.

Add another assist to the Hornets' point guard, who set an NBA record in leading New Orleans to a 100-89 victory over Miami on Saturday night.

Paul finished with 21 points and 13 assists for his sixth straight double-double of at least 20 points and 10 assists to open the season, surpassing the mark set by Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson in 1968.

''That is very historical for him to be able to pass a name like that that's a Hall of Famer,'' New Orleans coach Byron Scott said. ''If he stays healthy and keeps growing as a basketball player, obviously he'll be a Hall of Famer, too.''

Paul also had seven rebounds and four steals to help the Hornets (4-2) snap a two-game losing streak. Nevertheless, Paul wouldn't take complete credit for the record.

''This is a very unusual stat,'' Paul said. ''Assists only occur when your teammates do what they are supposed to be doing.''

Tyson Chandler added 13 points and 10 rebounds, and David West had 21 points for New Orleans. Dywane Wade led the Heat with 30 points, and Udonis Haslem added 12.

The Hornets rebounded after dropping games to Atlanta and Charlotte following an undefeated preseason and a 3-0 start.

And while players said effort was lacking in the previous two games, it wasn't Saturday night against Miami, especially in the second quarter when the Hornets pushed the lead to 11.

''We haven't, for some reason, come out and played with energy,'' New Orleans guard Morris Peterson said. ''A lot of times we'd be playing to the other team's level instead of playing our game and doing what we do, which has made us successful.

''We got away from that the last couple of games.''

The Heat (3-3) rallied in the second half, cutting a one-time 17-point deficit to seven with 5:06 to play.

But Paul wouldn't let Miami get any closer, scoring the next six New Orleans points. In all, Paul had nine points and two assists in the final quarter.

A Peja Stojakovic 3-pointer put the game out of reach. Paul, naturally, picked up the assist on the shot.

''He's such a special player and aggressively gets into the paint and makes plays,'' Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. ''Even from our vantage point, I couldn't tell what play he was making."
