While some voters penalized the Utah Utes (9-0) for their close win at New Mexico on Saturday, enough gave the Utes a high ranking to improve their standing in the Bowl Championship Series two spots to No. 8 Sunday.

TCU (9-1), which plays the Utes on Thursday at Rice-Eccles Stadium, moved up one spot to No. 12. BYU (8-1) had one of the biggest gains thanks to several upsets, as it improved five spots to No. 15 after its 45-42 win at Colorado State on Saturday.

Boise State (8-0), which beat New Mexico State 49-0 Saturday, improved one spot to No. 10 in the rankings, just behind Oklahoma State.

Boise State jumped ahead of the Utes in the Associated Press poll and closed the gap in the USA Today Coaches' Poll, but it wasn't enough to help the Broncos gain ground in the BCS standings because their schedule is easier. The Utes, who defeated the Lobos 13-10, should stay ahead of Boise State as long as they win out, since they have games against TCU and BYU remaining.

Alabama (9-0) moved up to No. 1, followed by Texas Tech (9-0), Penn State (9-0), Texas (8-1) and Florida (7-1), as the standings went through a shakeup after the Red Raiders upset the Longhorns, 39-33.
