Utah Jazz: Lighting, sound system debuts

Welcome to the dark ages.

For years the last NBA team to leave the lights on during player introductions - much to their players' displeasure - the Jazz debuted their new lighting and sound system Tuesday and will pull out all the stops at tonight's opener.

That includes handing out glowsticks to every fan and rolling out a court-sized flag for the national anthem. They will turn out every light in the arena, including advertising signs, and pause for 10 to 15 seconds for fans to appreciate the moment.

The introductions will start with AC/DC's "Hells Bells," move on to a highlight video and end with the starting five taking the court to the same Alan Parsons Project song as Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, "Sirius."

There also will be two bursts of fireworks and enough streamers to fill 100 cannons.

The cost to install the 120 new lights and 52 new speakers at the 17-year-old arena was more than $1 million, Jazz president Randy Rigby said.

"I wanted to have something that gets our players charged and excited and proud about our arena and something that really adds to the entertainment value for our fans," Rigby said.

Rigby told Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer about the plan more than a year ago and asked them to take notes last season on what introductions they liked around the league. "Maybe that explains why our road record wasn't what it should be," Rigby joked.

There also were laughs when Rigby was asked about Jazz coach Jerry Sloan's opinion of the introductions. He said Sloan was all in favor when he learned there would actually be fewer fireworks than before.

"He's seen what's going on in the league," Rigby added, "and he realizes what needs to happen to help keep the entertainment value where it needs to be to pay player salaries and coaches salaries."

The Jazz, who went a league-best 37-4 at home last season, also consolidated their championship banners, with all eight division championships now commemorated on one banner and their two Western Conference championships on another.

Rigby said the new lights and sound were just the beginning, with planning already under way on a new Jazz locker room and new premium seating. A high-definition video board remains a couple of years away, he added.

Briefly

Carmelo Anthony won't travel with the Nuggets while he is serving a two-game suspension stemming from his April drunken driving arrest. Instead, he will have a wisdom tooth removed today in Denver. . . . Jarron Collins will play tonight after battling right triceps tendinitis in the preseason. . . . The Jazz expect tonight's game to sell out, with fewer than 1,000 tickets still available Tuesday, Rigby said.
