Two years ago, Kassia Adamson found herself at the top of the mountain, winning a Class 4A girls' state championship as a doubles player.

Last season, Adamson was almost as good, advancing to the semifinals in first doubles and establishing for herself a fine legacy that would be cemented if she never won another tennis match.

On Friday, Adamson continued that legacy, this time as a singles player. The senior from Bountiful was the most dominant player in Class 4A's first day at Liberty Park.

How dominant was she? Not only did she not lose a match, not only did she not lose a set, but she also didn't lose a single game, defeating Rachel Smith of West and Priscila Argaez of Mountain View, both by 6-0, 6-0. She was the only player from No. 1 singles to accomplish that feat, and the only other player in the entire field to do as much was Kelsie Craig of Orem, who did so in second singles.

"I'm really proud of how I played today," Adamson said. "I worked really hard today and it paid off. Now I have to go back and get some rest because I have a really tough semifinal match."

Adamson played singles this season simply because she and her partner thought it was time for a break. And while she didn't have much experience playing by herself, she has adjusted and thrived. Adamson lost twice in the preseason but was 6-0 in region play and is looking for the ultimate success in the postseason.

"I've always been a doubles player," Adamson said. "Playing singles is a lot different because if you lose, it's because you suck and not because anything your partner did. It's a big mental adjustment."

And one she seems to be making just fine.
