BYU to host men's volleyball finals

PROVO - BYU will host the 2009 NCAA men's volleyball national championships in May, the school announced Thursday in a joint news conference with the NCAA.

The event will take place in the Smith Fieldhouse on BYU's campus.

The Cougars won the NCAA men's volleyball championship in 1999, 2001 and 2004 and have made several other Final Four appearances.

Women's volleyball

Utah 3, UNLV 0: Kathryn Haynie had 11 kills, surpassing 1,000 for her career, as the Utes defeated UNLV 25-13, 25-14, 25-22 at Crimson Court. It was the fifth straight victory for Utah (12-4, 4-2 MWC).

Utah outhit UNLV .368 to .123 for the match and held an 11-4 edge in blocks.

San Diego State 3, BYU 1: Despite a season-high 58 assists from Kiana Rogers, the Cougars lost 25-20, 27-25, 19-25, 27-25 in the Smith Fieldhouse.

Rachel Dyer had 12 kills and Ashton Hosford had 11 for BYU (9-6 overall, 2-4 MWC).

Idaho 3, Utah State 1: In Moscow, Idaho, the Aggies dropped the Western Athletic Conference match 25-22, 8-25, 24-26, 16-25 despite 13 kills from Melissa Osterloh.

Women's soccer

Utah 4, San Diego State 1: Kelly Isleib had a goal and three assists as the Utes (5-7-2 overall, 1-1-0 Mountain West ) scored a season-high tally.

Katy Reineke scored twice for the Utes, including the first goal of the game less than 3 minutes in, and Mallory Mitamura added one.

Utah goalkeeper Emalee Rogers worked the first half and had two saves, helping the Utes take a 1-0 halftime lead.

BYU 1, UNLV 0: In Provo, midfielder Whitney Feller scored on a header at the 52:12 mark as the Cougars dominated and won the MWC game.

BYU outshot the Rebels 28-6, including a 15-2 edge in shots on goals.

BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson had two saves to earn the shutout.

Weber State 1, Montana 0: In Ogden, Alyssa Foutz scored in the 19th minute as the Wildcats (4-6-2 overall) won their Big Sky Conference opener. Weber state outshot Montana 26-6.

Weber State's Rebecca Ritchie had four saves to earn her second straight shutout.
