It's been a whirlwind the past few weeks for Miles as she tries to make a decision as to what college to go to, keep up with her school work, and then there's also being one of the most successful athletes at Juan Diego.
Miles is on her way to her fourth tennis singles title and an unblemished high school career. Entering the week, she had a 68-0 career record.
"She's just solid on both sides of the ball," Juan Diego coach Arthur Miyazaki said. "She has good serves, she plays smart, she hits a ton. We expect her to do quite well in college, no matter where it is she goes."
But, Miles isn't thinking that far. At least not this week. This week, she'll be focused on getting a No. 1 singles title. Being undefeated throughout her four years at Juan Diego hasn't meant more pressure for Miles. She saw how teammate Romina Nedakovic dominated the high school tennis scene when she was at Juan Diego. Nedakovic is a year older than Miles and was the No. 1 singles player, pushing Miles to No. 2. Nedakovic now plays tennis at Brigham Young University.
"[I went undefeated my freshman year] and I had watched Romina do it for the second year in a row," Miles said. "[Watching Romina] drove it in the beginning. It would be awesome but college coaches don't look at high school so much. It would just be a personal accomplishment."
Miles will get plenty of competition from Park City's Ali McMahon and Desert Hills' Morgan Anderson in the Class 3A state meet this weekend. Miles will most likely face Logan's Katie Dahl in the first round at BYU.
Miyazaki has watched Miles for four years and knows that Miles isn't afraid to take the big shot. Ultimately, he thinks that's what is going to make her successful at the state meet.
"She goes for the winners. When she's on, she's devastating. Some people are fighters, they're tenacious and they hang in there," Miyazaki said. "Paige's game is to open the court up with her ground strokes and as soon as she gets the first ball, she goes for it. She plays offense, offense, offense and she doesn't get tight when she has to play defense."
After the state tournament, Miles won't have time to rest. A big decision looms for her. Miles recently took a recruiting trip to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and had to cancel trips to UC Irvine and LSU. She has had many offers from California schools but recently, she has given thought to playing at the University of Utah.
It has all been a little overwhelming - trying to keep up in school, staying focused in tennis and struggling to make a huge decision in what college to attend.
But, Miles has always taken it all in stride.
"It's been stressful," Miles said. "But, I'll figure it out."
