The New York Yankees made their chance for a playoff berth an even bigger long shot Wednesday.

Needing a win in Boston to at least keep from losing more ground, the Yankees were drummed 11-3 to drop seven games out of the AL wild card.

The victory kept the Red Sox 2 1/2 games ahead of Minnesota for the wild card and 3 1/2 games back from Tampa Bay in the AL East.

In the National League, the New York Mets took over the top spot in the NL East by defeating Philadelphia 6-3 to lead the Phillies by a half-game. Unfortunately, that puts the Phillies four games behind Milwaukee in the NL wild card.
