Prep Football: No one's laughing now at Syracuse

I admit that I had to suppress a chuckle, or two, a few weeks ago when I spoke to Syracuse head coach Russ Jones for our two-a-day blog and he told me that he fully expected to challenge for a playoff spot this season.

This is with a Titan team that went 0-10 a year ago and was still looking for the first win in program history.

So, yes, I almost laughed, and no I didn't expect Syracuse to get out of the box so fast, so early. And yes, last week was just one game, but everyone in Class 5A had to stand up and take notice of the Titans 31-6 win over Roy, which was one of the most dominant performances of the night.

Syracuse didn't beat Roy, it manhandled them. The Titans didn't just squeak into the win column, they broke down the door. Now nobody is chuckling, whether it be me, the other teams in Region 1 or Woods Cross, the team that faces a suddenly rejuvenated Syracuse team on Friday night.

Highland is reloading, not rebuilding

Highland lost key seniors - including Brittny Lolohea, Losa Faka'osi and Trish Haslem - but the Rams certainly will not have a rebuilding season. That's because the Rams have four players who got valuable varsity experience last year who will be the core of this year's team.

Highland lacks experience when it comes to the middle blocker position but head coach Clint Barnes said his team will have depth. Barnes saw this when the team went down to a team camp at Dixie State. Thinking that his team's youth would be exposed, Barnes was pleasantly surprised to see his team take fifth place in a tournament of about 28 teams.

"I'm really impressed with my group of girls," Barnes said. "They did an amazing job. We've got four kids coming back that are going to do some big things."

Highland will run a 6-2 offense to utilize setter Cristobel as a hitter.

"As good of a setter she is, she's a better hitter," Barnes said. "I'm going to throw my big guns on the outside and see who can stop

them."

Though the Rams will be adjusting and getting players used to their new roles, they still might have a chance at a region title.
