EVANSTON, Wyo. - First Classy Rhythm, the 2-to-1 second choice in the wagering, overpowered eight rivals to easily win the $14,550 Wyoming Downs Claiming Futurity on Sunday afternoon.
Owned and trained by Reed Nelson of Perry, and ridden by Shaunda Larsen, First Classy Rhythm prevailed by one length over 7-to-1 outsider Floor Burn in the 330-yard dash for 2-year-old quarter horses. Some Famous Girl, the 6-to-5 favorite, finished a nonthreatening fifth.
The win was the first in seven starts for First Classy Rhythm, a California-bred granddaughter of First Down Dash. It was worth $6,548, bumping her career earnings to $7,886.
The summer racing season at Wyoming Downs ends next Saturday and Sunday. Among the featured races will be the Diamond Classic Futurity and the $10,000-added Joe Joyce Memorial Derby.
