Sports in brief: BoxingCalzaghe-Jones fight rescheduled

Joe Calzaghe will face Roy Jones Jr. on Nov. 8 at Madison Square Garden in New York in a light heavyweight fight that was rescheduled after the undefeated Welshman sprained his wrist in training.

Calzaghe relinquished his WBC super middleweight title to fight Jones, the erstwhile pound-for-pound king and eight-time world champion who landed the big payday by beating a fading Felix Trinidad in January.

Chelsea formally bids for Robinho

Chelsea moved closer to signing Brazil striker Robinho after submitting a formal bid to Real Madrid on Thursday.

The Premier League club said last week that a transfer was being delayed by the Spanish champion's inability to sign a replacement.

Chelsea could have to pay around $40 million for Robinho to join Luiz Felipe Scolari's Portuguese signings, Deco and Jose Bosingwa.

The 24-year-old Robinho, who joined Madrid from Brazilian side Santos in 2005, would be a valuable addition to Chelsea's forward line with Didier Drogba set to miss the start of the season next weekend because of a a knee injury.

Roddick beats Vemic in L.A.

Top seed Andy Roddick earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dusan Vemic in the second round of the Countrywide Classic in Los Angeles.

Roddick's easy win capped a day in which former NCAA champion Amer Delic upset No. 7 seed Carlos Moya, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5).
