Rookie running back Ryan Torain is expected to miss about three months after breaking a bone in his left elbow.
Broncos coach Mike Shanahan announced Thursday that Torain would need surgery. Asked if the injury was a blow to the organization, he did not respond.
Andre Hall, one of the Broncos' three remaining healthy running backs, said the loss of Torain ''messes things up.''
''Ryan had the big body and the team had a short-yardage package in for him,'' he said. ''The rest of us are going to have to step it up.''
Besides Hall, the Broncos have Selvin Young and Anthony Aldridge at running back.
He didn't work out
The Carolina Panthers waived tackle Charles Spencer for what coach John Fox calls a "conditioning issue."
Spencer had missed several practices for what the team called a sore knee, but Fox said Thursday he was let go because of ''conditioning and weight.''
A little yoga
No fights, only some hard-hitting football between the St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans.
Maybe that 45-minute session of yoga really did help ease the tension - along with the tight hamstrings and sore backs.
The teams wrapped up their second day of joint practices Thursday with a special teams session in the morning. Most players not involved did some yoga on the Titans' indoor field. Then they concluded with a 90-minute session in the afternoon.
The Titans usually do some yoga once every week or two to stretch out muscles, especially during training camp. Titans coach Jeff Fisher had extended the invitation to St. Louis coach Scott Linehan for his Rams to join in. No reporters were allowed to watch the yoga session, and Linehan was busy enough in the special teams practice that he didn't get to sneak a peek himself.
