Austin • After staging a rally, BYU was rallied past.

BYU had its volleyball season ended on Friday in a 25-23, 25-14, 26-24, 25-22, 16-14 loss to Texas in Gregory Gym. BYU twice had match point in the fifth set, but the Cougars, who survived a similar situation in the third set, saw Texas advance to the fourth round of the NCAA Tournament.

A balanced BYU attack featured five players with between 12 and 16 kills, and freshman McKenna Miller led the Cougars with 16 kills on 50 attempts. BYU (29-4) had its 13-match winning streak snapped in the defeat.

"Texas is obviously a fantastic team, and volleyball is a game of runs," BYU senior Amy Boswell said. "We just came up a little bit short, and their run was a little longer than ours. I can honestly and without any regret say that we fought the entire time. We didn't give anything to Texas, they had to take it."

BYU controlled much of the opening set, and the Cougars were sending an early message when Texas coach Jerritt Elliott burned a timeout with his team trailing 20-17. Texas freshman Micaya White used five kills and an ace to force a handful of ties, the last of which was at 23-23. Texas outside hitter Paulina Prieto Cerame then put the set away with back-to-back kills.

Texas strolled in the second session, but the next two sets belonged to BYU. The Longhorns got to within a point of a sweep in the third set, but BYU fought off two match points in a 26-24 revival. The Cougars then proceeded to hold off Texas in the fourth frame.

BYU scored the first three points of the fifth set, and freshman Mary Lake extended that advantage to five points with two aces. The Cougars closed in on a knockout of Texas, which was the NCAA Tournament's fourth overall seed, with 12-7 and 14-12 leads.

A Texas team led by senior setter Chloe Collins and two players in Prieto Cerame and Nicole Dalton who have won national championships — Dalton at Texas in 2012 and Prieto Cerame at Penn State in 2013 — didn't flinch. The Longhorns had one last rally in them.

Trailing 14-12, Texas used a kill from Ebony Nwanebu to get the serve to freshman Autumn Rounsaville. White and Nwanebu exchanged kills as the Longhorns took their first lead of the set, and Texas then closed out the match on a hitting error by Boswell.

"Everybody thought we were down and out, down 12-7," Elliott said. "I give my team a lot of credit for the belief, making plays and executing at the end."

White had 24 kills and 20 digs to lead Texas (25-4), which will host either Michigan or Creighton on Saturday in a regional final. Texas has advanced to the Final Four in each of the past four years.

With the victory, Texas avenged its loss to BYU in the national semifinals in 2014. BYU still holds a 10-7 lead in the overall series.
