Provo • The BYU baseball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break the game wide open and went on to rout the University of San Diego 12-2 on Thursday night in the opener of a West Coast Conference series.

The seventh-inning outburst started with a bases-loaded double by Tanner Chauncey that drove in three runs and made it 7-2. With the bases loaded again, Chauncey scored when Brennon Anderson was hit by a pitch.

A walk by Jackson Cluff drove in Keaton Kringlen, then Bronson Larsen's single brought in two more runs. Larsen later scored on a single by Brennon Lund.

Chauncey finished with three hits, two runs and three RBIs to lead the Cougars, who are 24-4 overall and 8-2 in the WCC.

Rucker was the winning pitcher, going six-plus innings and striking out six, allowing eight hits before giving way to two relievers.
