Former BYU assistant coach Mark Atuaia followed Bronco Mendenhall to Virginia to coach running backs on the finer points of running away from defenders.

But when a driver in Florida hit a woman in front of Atuaia and drove off while he was on a recruiting trip, his mind shifted to stopping the run.

According to a story from the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Atuaia stopped at a grocery store for a snack. As he was leaving, he witnessed a car hit a woman before fleeing the scene.

Atuaia chased the hit and run driver, pinning the other car at a stop light with his rental car until a security guard from the shopping center took over.

Atuaia returned to the scene to help the woman, who was treated for her injuries. The hit and run driver reportedly was unaware of what happened because of foggy windows.

"My wife says I'm an idiot," he told the Times-Dispatch. "I think any reasonable person would try to help out."
