It isn't the middle of the week yet, but already BYU football coaches have received some welcome news.

On Tuesday — a day before Signing Day — Notre Dame tight end Tyler Luatua announced via Twitter that he is transferring to BYU.

Want [to] thank ND and the coaches for giving me this opportunity to play here!" Luatua wrote. "Excited to announce that I will transfer to BYU in the Fall! #BYU

Luatua was a three- or four-star recruit out of high school, depending on the recruiting service, and had more than 20 offers before choosing Notre Dame. He will join the team this fall, but won't be eligible to play for BYU until 2017, per NCAA transfer rules. He will have two years to play two.

At 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, Luatua was used lightly by Notre Dame and did not catch a pass in two years in South Bend.

His announcement on Tuesday wasn't a major surprise. Several publications have reported the announcement was imminent the last few days. Luatua was part of the group of recruits that visited BYU last weekend.
