Provo • Sophomore center Corbin Kaufusi said Thursday that BYU's basketball practices have been filled with a lot more emotion than usual the past few days.

An upset loss that included 24 turnovers and 13 missed free throws will do that to a team.

Four nights after falling 66-65 at Long Beach State, the Cougars return to action on Friday night with a game against Division II Adams State at the Marriott Center. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. and the game will be televised by BYUtv.

"Everybody is trying to figure out what we can do to fix what happened last time," said Kaufusi, one of the few Cougars who played well against the 49ers. He had 17 points and 10 rebounds, both career highs, but almost everyone else struggled against LBSU's pressure defense.

Coach Dave Rose said a review of the game film told him what he already knew: The Cougars (1-1) did not play well on offense and were just OK on defense. They made a nice comeback, but 8-for-21 free-throw shooting doomed them to a rare November loss.

"It wasn't our best game, that's for sure," Rose said. "We had a lot of young players playing for the first time that kind of let the situation get to them, the pressure. … We turned it over 24 times. That should tell you enough about what went wrong."

Rose said the a lot of the turnovers were "silly" and came in situations where the Cougars were over-aggressive and attacked when they should have passed the ball. Other times, they passed too much in situations where they should have attacked.

"I mean, we were really, really out of synch," he said. "We didn't really have any flow to us. … Our execution was awful."

However, the coach was encouraged by the play of sophomore Jamal Aytes off the bench. Aytes, who didn't play in the 85-54 win over Utah Valley last week, made his BYU debut with eight points and four rebounds in 14 minutes.

"I just hoop, man," he said. "If I can go, I go my hardest. If I can't, I just sit out. But it felt nice to be able to play well. I didn't know if I could do that still. But it feels good knowing I can."

Rose said practices this week have marked the first time he's had an entire team healthy in five weeks. He will keep the same starting lineup of Kaufusi and Kyle Davis inside and Kyle Collinsworth, Jake Toolson and Chase Fischer at the guard line on Friday against the Grizzlies (0-2), but acknowledged that there will likely be some shuffling down the road as different guys emerge and different rotations work.

"The team is kind of a work in progress right now, trying to find not only the right combination, but the flow," Rose said. "We've been a really fast-paced team over the years and been really guard-oriented. I believe our post players this year deserve some attention, and we need to get that thing inside and start playing inside-out maybe more than we have."

Adams State, from Alamosa, Colo., lost 83-68 at Utah State on Tuesday night in what was considered an exhibition game for the Grizzlies and a real one for the Aggies.

"It is a really talented team with individual guys who can really score," Rose said. "So we will get tested in a lot of ways."
