Provo • Both of BYU's highly successful volleyball programs got new head coaches on Monday.

Almost four weeks after men's volleyball coach Chris McGown abruptly resigned, BYU announced it will replace him with its women's volleyball coach, Shawn Olmstead. Olmstead had been the women's coach since 2011 and led the Cougars to a national runner-up finish in 2014.

Heather Olmstead, who has been an assistant coach since 2011 and was promoted to associate head coach in January of 2014, will replace her brother as the women's head coach.

Shawn Olmstead went 103-25 as the women's head coach and took the Cougars to three trips to the round of 16 at the NCAA championships, including last year's run to the national championship match.

He was the 2014 AVCA Division I National Coach of the Year and West Coast Conference Co-Coach of the Year.

"He has been successful at every level, and I'm excited to see him make the transition to coaching our men's program," said BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe.

Shawn Olmstead played as a libero for BYU from 2000-2004 and was a member of the school's national championship teams in 2001 and 2004. He broke the school record for digs (204) in his senior season.

"Chris McGown and his staff have done an outstanding job and I'm fortunate to be taking over a program that is one of the best in the country," Shawn Olmstead said.

Heather Olmstead also prepped at California's Carpinteria High and then went on to play collegiately for Utah State from 1998-2001 and was a four-year starter for the Aggies.

She was recently selected as an assistant coach for Team USA for the 2015 Pan American Games.

"She has been an integral part of the continued success and development of our nationally recognized women's program over the past four seasons," Holmoe said.

Heather Olmstead was an assistant coach at Utah from 2006-2011 and helped the Utes make two NCAA tournament appearance. She was an assistant coach at Utah State from 2003-2006.

"I am humbled and excited to lead the BYU women's volleyball program into the future," Olmstead said. "I am excited to get into the gym and continue preparing for the 2015 season."
