Darius McFarland wanted to focus on playing defensive end in his upcoming senior season at Box Elder, so rather than draw out his recruitment, he committed to BYU on Friday night.

But the Cougars were always atop the list for the 6-foot-3, 250-pounder who recorded 42 tackles, six tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks as a junior for the Bees (5-7).

"On one side, it's a weight off my back. I'm excited to lock it in for my senior year," McFarland said. "BYU is one of the top schools around in every category: academically, football-wise, socially and morally. It's a privilege for me to be a part of that."

McFarland also maintains FBS offers from Army, Air Force and Wyoming. Although he also led Box Elder with 28 receptions for 382 yards and two touchdowns as a tight end, he said he expects to play from a four technique on the defensive line for the Cougars.

"I'd say versatile. I'm able to hold my ground on the line, but at the same time, able to use my speed to get past people," McFarland explained when asked to describe his style for those who have yet to see him play. "I enjoy the mental side of the game. I think that's a part of the game that is very much overlooked. I enjoy that aspect."
