Provo • Longtime BYU women's gymnastics coach Brad Cattermole is retiring after 28 years directing the program, the school announced Monday.

BYU also said that Cattermole's wife, Dawn, an assistant since 1987, is also stepping down.

Athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a school news release that a search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

The Cattermoles guided BYU to eight national championship tournament appearances, the 15th most in NCAA history. The Cougars also received 24 NCAA regional championship berths in Cattermole's time at the school.

BYU has finished the season ranked in the top 25 poll 15 times the past 28 seasons, including three top-10 finishes. Seven Cougars have earned a total of 17 NCAA All-America awards.

"It's been a great 28 years for Dawn and myself," Brad Cattermole said. "We've loved working at BYU and have enjoyed a lot of success. Our staff has been together a long time. … It has been on of the great blessings of my life to go to work every day with my wife, Dawn."

Holmoe said the couple whose name has been synonymous with BYU gymnastics will be hard to replace.

"We want to express our appreciation to Brad and Dawn for their years of dedicated service to BYU and the gymnastics program," Holmoe said. "They have run a successful program and have had a positive impact in the lives of many student-athletes. We wish them the very best as they begin the next chapter in their lives."

The Cattermoles have owned and operated All-American Gymnastics in Lindon since 1976. Dawn Cattermole has served as the recruiting coordinator the past 13 years.

Assistant coach Shauna Mertz is the sole remaining member of the staff at BYU.
