Miami • When Thursday night's bed-check came, BYU senior linebacker Mike Alisa was fast asleep, and had been for quite awhile.

Bronco Mendenhall installed a curfew for his football team when it arrived Wednesday at the posh Loews Miami Beach Hotel in South Beach, a place famous for wild, all-night parties, but the coach reported Friday that so far nobody has broken it.

"I think it is a 1 a.m. curfew, so yeah, not bad at all," said Alisa. "I think it is just one of those things where you have to have it for the team, but I don't think it is necessary."

A veteran of five visits to Las Vegas for bowl games, along with postseason trips to Dallas, San Diego, Albuquerque and San Francisco, Mendenhall isn't taking any chances. He said from here on out the curfew will move up an hour each night before Monday's noon kickoff against Memphis.

"We have a mature team," Mendenhall said. "And any report [of misbehavior], it doesn't take long to get to me, and so far nothing serious. But if there are, they know they will be sent home. We explained that, and at least they know what they are choosing. We usually send one or two home each year. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens again, but we are hoping we don't have to."

The Cougars met and practiced early nearly every morning during the season, and they are continuing that routine in Miami, so Alisa said "everybody is trying to get to be early, far as I can tell."

Still waiting

With the period for signing mid-year transfers having started Wednesday, Mendenhall said Friday that BYU is pursuing just one mid-year transfer from the junior college ranks, a quarterback who he could not name.

That transfer is believed to be Trent Hosick, a dual-threat quarterback who started his career at Missouri before transferring to Arizona Western College. Hosick committed to BYU in April, but has said publicly that he's re-thinking his destination because he wants to play right away and believed Taysom Hill would turn pro after his junior year. Hill's plans may have changed when he suffered a fractured leg against USU, and he confirmed last month he is returning to BYU for his senior season.

"We won't know on him until probably the end of the period," Mendenhall said.

Better practice

After saying the Cougars were flat and looked tired after Thursday's practice, Mendenhall said Friday's practice was much better. It was the last full practice of the season; Saturday, the Cougars will have a walkthrough at Florida International's stadium, then won't do anything football-related on Sunday, per school policy.

Better practices "usually happen once an emphasis is made, which happened in meetings," Mendenhall said. "It wasn't that the assignments were poor yesterday. I just thought they were flat."

Briefly

Both BYU and Memphis players were scheduled to attend the Miami Heat-Washington Wizards NBA game at nearly American Airlines Arena on Friday night. … Thursday night, there was a belly flop contest and a dance-off on the beach before many BYU players watched the school's women's volleyball team beat Texas on a big-screen television screen at their hotel.
