The game • Tacoma pounded out 16 hits and the Rainiers foiled Salt Lake's attempt to get over .500 for the first time since June 1 with a 12-7 victory Thursday at Smith's Ballpark. In front of 6,248 fans, the Bees slipped to 32-33 on the season.

Turning point • After Tacoma pitcher Brad Mills struck out Quintin Berry with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the fourth, the Rainers broke open a 4-2 game with a four-run fifth. Mike Baxter drove in two runs with a double.

Bees' MVP • Catcher Juan Graterol went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI. He extended his hitting streak to four games with a single in the fourth. He ended up 5 for 11 in the series against the Rainiers.

Hidden hero • Salt Lake's Ryan Jackson finished off an eight-pitch at-bat in the fourth with a two-out, two-run single. He ripped a 2-2 pitch up the middle, which briefly kept the Bees in the game.

Flashing leather • With nobody out and a runner aboard in the second inning, Tacoma's Boog Powell ran down Sherman Johnson's 400-foot drive to deep center field and made a running catch.

Angel angle • Salt Lake's Keith Johnson started a five-day vacation Thursday, which the Angels mandate for their minor league managers and coaches. Ty Boykin, the organization's roving outfield, base-running and bunting coach, is managing the Bees.

Quoteworthy • Asked what he hopes to accomplish during his brief stint of calling the shots in Salt Lake, Boykin said, "… It's just a question of making sure things stay intact and doing things the way they are supposed to be done."

History lesson • On June 16, 2003, Barry Wesson's two-run double in the ninth inning helps the Salt Lake Stingers defeat Fresno, 7-4. Greg Jones pitches 2 2⁄3 innings of scoreless relief to get credit for the win.
