Kaleb Cowart drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and Jefry Marte followed with a two-run homer, leading Salt Lake to a 5-2 win over Reno on Monday night at Smith's Ballpark. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but rain delayed the start three hours, so they played only one game.
Turning Point • With one out in the eighth, Todd Cunningham reached on an infield single. He stole second and moved to third on Nick Buss' groundout. Cowart followed by lining a 2-2 pitch over second base.
Bees MVP • Cowart had two of Salt Lake's nine hits. Before his tiebreaking single, he tripled and scored in the second inning, when the Bees tied the game, 1-1.
Hidden Hero • Salt Lake starter Nate Smith allowed one run on four hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked one. He threw 64 pitches, including 44 strikes, and left the game with a 2-1 lead.
Flashing Leather • With a runner on first and two out in the third, Reno's Matt Buschmann ripped a line drive to left center field. But Salt Lake's Rafael Ortega got a good jump on the play and made a running catch.
Angel Angle • Salt Lake infielder Rey Navarro was a late scratch from the starting lineup. Presumably, he's headed to Los Angeles, which has lost shortstop Andrelton Simmons because of a thumb injury that will require surgery.
History lesson • On May 9, 1997, Salt Lake starter LaTroy Hawkins allowed a franchise-record 12 runs in the first inning of a 13-1 loss at Colorado Springs. Hawkins gave up 10 hits in the first, including a pair of three-run homers.
