Rey Navarro went 3-for-4 with two RBIs Friday night to lead Salt Lake to a 6-1 win over Reno at Smith's Ballpark. The opener of the Bees' eight-game home stand was delayed an hour by rain.
Turning point • Salt Lake broke open a 2-1 game in the seventh. Todd Cunningham singled and Nick Buss doubled. Jefry Marte's infield out scored Cunningham. After Kyle Kubitza was hit by a pitch, Navarro ripped a two-run double.
Bees' MVP • After going 2-for-12 on a just-completed road trip, Buss went 4-for-5 including a double and two triples. He drove in a run and helped Salt Lake snap a six-game losing streak.
Hidden hero • In his first start after being sent down, starter Matt Shoemaker battled through six innings. He allowed one run and six hits. He struck out eight, walked two and threw 101 pitches.
Flashing leather • The Bees used a double play to end the top of the fourth. With runners at first and third, Shoemaker fanned Zach Borenstein and catcher Jett Bandy made a perfect throw to nail Jack Reinheimer trying to steal second.
Angel angle • After losing ace Garrett Richards for the season, the Angels recalled pitcher Javy Guerra. To make room on its roster, L.A. sent outfielder Rafael Ortega to Salt Lake.
History lesson • On May 6, 1994, Bernardo Brito hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Salt Lake Buzz a 6-5 win over Tacoma. It was the first walk-off home run in franchise history.
