Ogden • Braydon Swapp, a rising junior at Utah State, made a birdie putt on his 18th hole amidst the roar of fighter jets and the haze of construction dust at Hill Air Force Base's Hubbard Golf Course on Tuesday and immediately thought about four putts that lipped out earlier in his round.

It was after 12:15 p.m. and Swapp, 20, figured his two-day total of 9-under-par 133 would not be good enough for medalist honors at the 119th Utah State Amateur. After all, BYU golfer Patrick Fishburn, the tournament's defending champion, had fired a 9-under 63 at Hubbard on Monday and had yet to tee off at Ogden Golf & Country Club on Tuesday.

"Fishburn will go low again," Swapp predicted, knowing his fellow Ogden native grew up playing at the club.

But Swapp was wrong, to his own enjoyment. Fishburn made a couple of double bogeys on his back nine — the front nine at OG&CC — and posted a two-day total of 134 to leave Swapp as the stroke-play champion.

"I just hit some dumb shots," said Fishburn, displeased with himself for not winning medalist, calling that honor "the thing you want to do. Beating 288 other guys is always a good thing."

So Swapp, who played for nearby Weber High and then North Idaho College before transferring to USU last fall, adds State Am medalist to his list of accomplishments after Tuesday's eight-birdie, two-bogey round of 66 matched his career-low score.

"I've been playing well all summer," Swapp said. "And I grew up playing at Hill because my grandparents can get on here. I'm really comfortable here."

Unfortunately for Swapp, the remainder of the tournament will be played at Ogden G&CC. Sixty-four players will begin the match play portion of the tournament, beginning Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.

Fishburn was comfortable after getting to 11-under with three birdies and a bogey on his first nine at Ogden, but disaster struck on his 10th hole when he hit his tee shot out of bounds and took a double-bogey. His driver got him into more trouble on his 14th hole, the short 352-yard fifth hole, when he tried to drive the green and hit his tee shot well right. Another double bogey left him two shots behind Swapp. He birdied the sixth hole, but made pars on his last three holes to finish in second.

"If I was up by five or down by two, I would hit driver every time there," Fishburn said. "I don't think that I've hit anything but driver there. … The normal play is driver. I have knocked it on there 50 times, easily."

BYU golfer Kelton Hirsch and former Weber State golfer Colton Dallimore tied for third at 136 and St. George's Christian Jensen — a finalist in 2013 — placed fifth at 137.

Fifteen golfers shot 3-over par 145 and a playoff was held for the final 14 match-play berths — almost.

One of the 15 players, West Valley City's Mike Bauman, did not return to the course and was disqualified. The other 14 players — including notables such as 2013 and 2014 champion Jon Wright and University of Utah golfer Mitchell Schow Jr. — went through the motions of the playoff before officials stopped it at 8:38 p.m. because Bauman had not appeared.

The playoff, as it was, didn't start until 8:10 p.m. because afternoon tee times at Hubbard were suspended 45 minutes due to HAFB's South Gate temporarily closing for security reasons. Tournament officials feared some golfers would be late for their tee times. When Bauman didn't return — officials said they unsuccessfully tried to call him four or five times — their fears of darkness halting the playoff were allayed.
