Skyline freshman Connor Robb-Wilcox may stand only 5 foot 6, but he more than made up for it in heart.

He proved instrumental in propelling the Eagles to the Class 4A boys' tennis state title by defeating Timpview's Josh Pearce in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to win the No. 1 singles crown.

"I owe it all to my teammates, my mom and my coaches," Robb-Wilcox said. "They push me to do my best, and I want to thank all of the people that came out and supported me. I give a lot of credit to Josh — he played a great match and got the best out of me."

It didn't start smoothly for Robb-Wilcox. Pearce broke the freshman's serve in the opening game and held for a 2-0 lead. But just when it appeared that the freshman was in trouble, Robb-Wilcox not only settled down, but he reeled off an impressive seven games in a row until Pearce finally broke the onslaught.

Robb-Wilcox called for a medical timeout due to cramping in his right hand midway through the second set. It appeared the tide was shifting as Pearce held a 3-2 lead in the set at the time. It was questionable if Robb-Wilcox would be able to continue. However the freshman righted the ship following a brief delay, reset himself and cruised on home, winning four straight games for what might be the first of many titles to come.

"I don't know what the future holds for me, but I'm going to continue to be the best that I can and to help my team win championships," he said.

Robb-Wilcox relied heavily on a consistent forehand, a lethal backhand and an effective slice to keep Pearce off balance for the majority of the match. His serve also was instrumental, tallying three aces in the match.

Whenever it appeared that momentum was heading in the direction of Pearce, Robb-Wilcox elevated his play when he needed it the most.

Skyline collected 24 points to take down defending state champ Timpview in the team standings to earn the state title. —
