West Jordan • Portia Price has not put up prototypical numbers expected of a cleanup hitter in Class 5A this season.

The junior catcher has seven extra-base hits — all doubles — for the Copper Hills softball team all season.

But Price broke out Tuesday with her first career home run and five RBIs in the Grizzlies' 10-3 victory against visiting Riverton in the first round of the state tournament.

"I had two strikes and was just trying to get on and do whatever I could, looking for a good hit," Price said.

Price delivered a two-run single in a three-run first inning that chased Riverton starter Eryn Williams, then blasted a three-run home run to left in the second inning.

Copper Hills (16-11) battered the defending state champs with 15 hits, all in the first three innings. First baseman Kaci Bobo had three hits and three runs scored, while Chloe Crebs hit a solo home run.

Price highlighted a strong performance from the middle of the Grizzlies' order. The Nos. 2-6 hitters accounted for nine runs, eight hits and seven RBIs.

"I was kind of like, 'Finally,' " Copper Hills coach Jentry Johnson said about Price. "She's been my No. 4 hitter all year. I haven't moved her, not once, because I know she has the potential. I have a lot of confident in her and her approach at the plate. I knew it was gonna come."

Copper Hills (16-11) won for the sixth time in its past seven outings and scored 10 or more runs for the fifth time in that span.

Copper Hills advanced to meet Fremont in the second round Thursday. It'll be a rematch of Fremont's 7-2 home victory March 24.

"I was unfortunately out of town and didn't see that game, " Johnson said. "We're excited for the next challenge." —
