Provo • Junior sprinter Dominic Bentil helped provide 36 of Lone Peak's 59 points at the Class 5A boys' state track meet Saturday, lifting the Knights into fifth place and a single point behind Weber.

He blazed to the finish well in front of his competition in the 100 meters in 10.76 seconds, and did the same when running the anchor leg of the 4x100 relay with teammates Ammon Hannemann, Jackson McChesney and Trey Jackson.

The team earned a sterling mark of 41.96 in that event, and both performances will end up on the all-time state list.

Bentil also finished a close second in the 200 at 21.40 behind new state record holder Hunter Woodhall of Syracuse (21.17), a senior headed to the University of Arkansas. Bentil's mark will claim the third spot on the all-time list.

He also finished second to Woodhall in the 400 with aspirations to move up there as well. Bentil crossed in 48.70 to Woodhall's 46.24.

This has been a breakout season for Bentil, who spent his first two years at Lone Peak chasing senior teammate McChesney, who has signed to play football at BYU after serving an LDS mission to Chile.

"This is the first year I've regularly been able to beat him," Bentil said. "When I first met him as a freshman, he was the loudest guy on the track. He made practice fun. I couldn't ask for a better teammate."

McChesney has handled the role reversal with grace.

"First it was me pushing him, and now he pushes me," he said. "I think it's been good for both of us. He's matured a lot, and this year he's put it all together. He used to think too much, and now he's just going out and running. He's close to that state record in the 200, and I hope he goes and gets it next year."

Bentil totally has embraced this sport.

"I eat, breathe and sleep this," he said. "It's what I'm actually good at. It took me a while to learn to love it, but it has taught me a lot of life lessons."

Bentil said he takes no days off.

"If I don't give it everything I can, there's not much point," he said. "Doing this has helped me focus better in school and in life.

"I say that track's my girlfriend. If you treat her right, she'll treat you right. I'm just trying to find my own talent and see how far it can take me."

The 5A team title came down the final race, with Davis holding a two-point advantage over Syracuse. The Darts won the 4x400 relay, while Syracuse was disqualified for an illegal exchange. —
