Provo • Speedster Brinn Jensen never forgot that everything she did this year was helping to start a legacy at new school Skyridge.

The Weber State-bound senior wrote her own illustrious chapter Saturday, earning Class 4A gold medals in the 100 meters (12.41 seconds), 200 (24.64) and 400 (55.95) — a race in which she'd never participated before this season.

Jensen said the competition was toughest in the 100, so that event presented the biggest challenge in that way. But she was far more worried about the 400.

"The 400 is always scary," she said. "It's longer, so it gives you more time to think during the race and get in your head."

She has combatted this by practicing visualization, developing her race strategy and then following it. It worked for her in the state meet.

"There was a point in this race when I knew it was mine," she said.

It came with about 150 meters left.

"This is the race where I doubted myself the most," she said. "I tried to prepare the best I could, but it was still a relief to get it done."

She wasn't too pleased with her start in the 100, but knew she had an advantage from her past experience in the event.

"I came out of the blocks a little behind," she said. "My start is probably the weakest part of my race.

"However, my strongest part is that once I hit my maximum speed, I can maintain that for longer than other runners," she said. "That's how I was able to overcome the slow start."

Once she got those two behind her, the 200 was kind of the icing on the cake.

"The 200 has been the event where I've had the most consistent good times," she said.

True to form, her time will find a place on the all-time list.

She also finished fourth with her team in 4x100 relay, crossing in 49.25.

However, her favorite thing about track has little to do with running.

"It's the people you meet, become friends with and compete against," she said. "You're happy when they do well and they're happy when you do well."

And she's leaving quite a legacy after Skyridge's inaugural year.

"Since a lot of teams earlier in the year did well, we wanted to do the same," she said. "It was fun to start a tradition of success." —
