Sandy • Juan Diego had seen this unfold before, but the Soaring Eagle didn't care for the outcome last time.

Juan Diego found itself in a similar spot to the 2016 boys' lacrosse finale, when Brighton stormed back from a halftime deficit and overtook the Soaring Eagle in the end.

So they did something about it Saturday.

With the final seconds ticking away in a tied game, Andy Schuman tried to work free near the Bengals goal but ended up behind it. He found a streaking Blake Davis, who buried a shot low and to the far corner with 15 seconds left to capture the Class A state championship 10-9 over Brighton.

"I knew I had to get open, had to at least try to get a goal," Davis said. "It was intense, I was freaking out, I was nervous. We had to get this last goal."

Schuman said: "I just looked at the field and saw Blake Davis cutting to the goal. I tried to throw the ball over the goal to get it to him. He had to jump a little bit, the pass wasn't perfect, but he was able to stick the goal."

The Bengals trailed 5-3 at halftime then scored four straight goals to take the lead. But Juan Diego responded by scoring three straight to help set up the finish.

"It was a great game — Brighton has a great team. I was hoping for a little higher-quality lacrosse on both sides, but that's what we got," Juan Diego coach John Holmes said. "We just wanted to get the ball moving quickly and get the dodge behind and then we'd be able to pop it out top."

Juan Diego tied the game with 2:22 let when Sam Burbank — on a pass from Davis — shot past Bengals goalie Houston Kraenbuhl.

"The seniors stepped up and said, 'Hey, let's not let that happen again,'" Holmes said. "I'd say we were a little bit flat today, but hey, we got the victory." —
