BYU freshman Rhett Rasmussen posted a 67 at The Country Club of Salt Lake City and led five Utahns into the sectional qualifying stage of the U.S. Open in a local event Monday.

Rasmussen's 4-under-par total (No. 3 was played as a par-4) made him the medalist by two strokes over University of Utah golfer Mitchell Schow and former Ute Brandon Kida, who's now a pro. Club member Brigham Gibbs, 52, and BYU golfer Kelton Hirsch shot 70s and advanced in a playoff as BYU's Spencer Dunaway bogeyed No. 1.

Rasmussen, from Corner Canyon High School, shot a front-nine 30, making four birdies in a five-hole stretch. He made two bogeys on the back nine, with a birdie on No. 17.

In the playoff, Dunaway drove into the left rough and his approach shot found the thick rough in front of the green. He chipped to 6 feet and missed his par attempt, while Gibbs and Hirsch made routine pars.

Jacob Holt, Zack Baker, Nathan Wunderli, Pete Stone and Jonathon Thomas missed the playoff by one shot.

In sectional qualifying, golfers will have about a 1-in-10 chance of advancing to the U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin in mid-June.
