Spanish Fork • South Summit senior Hanna Peterson obviously had plenty left in the tank for Friday's state semifinal softball game.

The Wildcats survived a grueling nine-inning quarterfinal before beating Beaver 6-0 in the semifinal to advance to Saturday's Class 2A state championship game at noon in Spanish Fork.

Peterson threw both complete games and managed the challenge well despite the extra work.

Leadoff batter Alayna Hansen raced home on a passed ball for the initial lead in the top of the first inning against Beaver. South Summit strung together some hits in the fifth and seventh innings to add insurance it turned out it didn't need.

Senior shortstop Elise Bush had three hits in the game, including a double, scored twice and also had an RBI.

"I knew coming into the tournament that I wasn't going to get any pitches straight down the pipe," she said. "I knew I was going to have to work harder at the plate, and I'm glad it worked out today."

Bush said she thinks her team is beginning to peak at the right time.

"Everyone is hitting and making the other teams make plays and errors," she said. "We're forcing other teams to make decisions. Everyone on this team has been stepping up, and I'm very proud of all of them."

There was almost no break between games, but the Wildcats weren't worried after beating Enterprise 5-4 in nine innnings in the quarterfinal.

"We were a bit tired, but we were fine after the first inning," Bush said. "Our whole idea this season is to fight on. When we do, this is what happens."

Peterson admitted to concern about how well she would hold up after the first game.

"I know when I get tired, I start missing my spots more," she said. "I try to be tough mentally and to tell myself not to hit the batters or let them walk."

The Beavers threatened in the late innings, but South Summit managed to preserve the shutout.

"Sometimes when the other team starts hitting, you can't do anything about it," Peterson said. "You have to trust your teammates. I had 100 percent confidence in my defense, and they helped me get the job done."

Beaver will need to knock off defending state champion Manti in Saturday's 9:30 a.m. game to earn a rematch with South Summit. —
