The stage was set Wednesday for the West Panthers to do what they always seem to do these days: put wbat after bat on softball and shower a deluge of runs on whichever pitcher dared to face them.

But in this production, someone forgot to send a script to one of the key players,

Mia Cullimore allowed only six hits and kept the West batters under control as third-ranked Davis put the clamps on the top-rated Panthers and came away with a 3-1 road win.

Cullimore didn't just excel from the pitching circle. Her two-run homer to left in the third essentially gave the Darts all they needed in the key Region 2 contest.

"I have faith in my team and, if I'm giving it a hundred percent, they'll back me up," Cullimore said.

"I don't know if I ever felt comfortable. I never expected to hold West to just one run. That's an explosive lineup, and we figured it'd be a 10- to 12-run game," Davis coach Mylei Zachman said. "Mia has done an incredible job this year. She is locked in, she's worked hard to hit spots and develop pitches. She's been willing to put the team on her shoulders from the circle."

Through the first five innings, it was Davis (16-2, 8-0) that consistently put more runners on the base paths.

After getting players in scoring position in the first and second innings, the Darts broke through in the third. A single by sophomore Paige Elkins set up Cullimore's two-run blast one batter later.

In the fifth, Elkins lofted a sacrifice fly to right to score Paige Reynolds for a 3-0 lead. Reynolds had doubled and stolen third to start the frame.

After that, it was a question of whether Cullimore could keep West (16-5, 8-1) at bay.

At times, the Panthers sent scorching line drives off Cullimore offerings. But hard-hit balls by Rayna Aiono in the fourth and by Jazmyn Rollin in both the third and sixth went straight to Darts' outfielders.

"Oh my gosh, that lineup is incredible," Zachman said. "But, you know, our girls played really, really well. They did a good job."

Cullimore used her fastball and change-up effectively throughout and only faltered when Breah Ava socked a triple down the third-base line in the sixth and then crossed home on an error.

"She did a great job, kind of mixing up her pitches and keeping our hitters off-balance," West coach Keith Lopati said. "We wanted to be a little too aggressive, and it hurt us in critical situations." —

Davis 3, West 1

• Davis junior pitcher Mia Cullimore stretched out six West hits over her seven innings of work for the win.

• Cullimore also hit the game's only home run - a two-ruh blast to left in the third inning.

• Paige Elkins singled for Davis just before Cullimore's longball and then drove in the third Darts' run with a sac-fly in the fifth.
