Hills of dirt invaded Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday night, along with plenty of supercross competitors.

And fans of the American Motorcyclist Association series were also there to watch their favorites ride over the 500 truck loads of dirt imported into the venue. Those in attendance quickly discovered the best riders over the course were the ones who best navigated the so-called "whoop" section — the fourth straightaway with a group of tightly-placed small mounds.

That included the 450SX point leaders, and Ryan Dungey from Cortez, Co., and Eli Tomac of Clermont, Fla., tied for first with 294 points each, didn't disappoint.

Renewing acquaintances early in the evening in a qualifying heat, Dungey took the lead from Jason Anderson in one of the runs through the whoop section and eventually held off Tomac at the finish line.

Dungey was third in the 450SX race the last time the AMA Supercross tour came to Utah, but he's been the overall champion for the nationwide series the past two years.

Other heat winners at the evening session, after practice runs and qualifying earlier in the day, included Josh Grant of Wildomar, Calif., in a 450SX race and, in the 250SX category, Aaron Plessinger from Hamilton, Ohio, and Martin Davalos of Clermont, Fla..

Plessinger though, in the whoop section, flipped over the front of his bike while well in front of the 250SX finals race to force him out of contention. Shane McElrath of Canton, N.C., ended up taking the win in that competition while the finals for the 450SX was held late Saturday night.

The riders in the 450SX Class raced on 450cc four-stroke motorcycles over a course that includes jumps and obstacles. Another category at the event for younger competitors was on 250cc four-stroke bikes.
