Provo • Friday was a good day for BYU's men's and women's golf teams in the West Coast Conference Golf Championships at their home course, par-72 Riverside Country Club.

BYU's men improved on their first-round lead, shooting an 8-under-par 280 in the second round, and are at 17-under 559 for the tournament, five shots ahead of second-place Pepperdine.

BYU freshman Peter Kuest shot a 5-under-par 67 Friday to move into a tie for first place with Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh at 7-under 137. BYU junior Patrick Fishburn shot a 71 and is alone in third at 139.

The Cougars also counted Rhett Rasmussen's 70 and CJ Lee's 72 on Friday. Rasmussen is tied for ninth at 142 and BYU's Spencer Dunaway is tied for 11th at 143 after a non-counting 74 in the second round.

BYU's women moved into first place, firing an even-par 288 in the second round of the 54-hole tournament to pass first-day leader Pepperdine. The Cougars are at 8-over-par 584, while the Waves are at 11-over-par 587 heading into Saturday's final round.

BYU's women snapped Pepperdine's 14-year conference tournament winning streak last year and are the defending champions of this event.

Pepperdine's Hira Naveed leads the race for medalist honors at 1-under 143, while BYU's Rose Huang is in second at 144 and Kendra Dalton is third at 145. BYU's Alex White is tied for fourth at 147 and Brooklyn Hocker is alone in seventh at 148.
