The Salt Lake Bees completed a three-game sweep of the Fresno Grizzlies and finished off their seven-game homestand with five wins thanks to a 6-2 victory at Smith's Ballpark on Monday night. The Bees collected 15 hits, including three extra-base hits.
The Bees (6-6) jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning thanks to consecutive RBI singles by Dustin Ackley (who has now reached base safely in 11 straight games), Ryan LaMarre and Nolan Fontana. Fresno (5-7) responded with a two-run home run by Preston Tucker in the top of the third to make it a one-run game. The Bees tacked on a run in the fifth on another RBI single by LaMarre (2-for-3, 2 RBIs), and they added two more on a bases-loaded single by Eric Young Jr., who went 5-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
Turning Point • The Bees added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning to give their bullpen breathing room after having given up a pair of slim leads earlier in the homestand. Young's two-out, two-run single pushed the lead to four runs.
Bees MVP • Young had the team's first five-hit game since Alex Yarbrough on June 7, 2015. Young also matched a career-high with five hits. His previous five-hit game came on July 3, 2007.
Hidden Hero • Bees starting pitcher Manny Banuelos pitched a season-high six innings and allowed two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out four. The Bees are now 3-0 in his starts.
Quoteworthy • "We had a lot of close games there in Albuquerque to start off the season," Young said. "The record didn't show too much for it when we were coming back home. Having a good showing here puts us right back, pretty much, even. I say we're a fresh season now. Let's see what happens. Everybody go out there having fun and see what we can do."
Angel Angle • The Angels moved right-handed pitcher Huston Street to the 60-day disabled list in order to clear a spot for Parker Bridwell, a pitcher the Angels acquired from the Baltimore Orioles via trade in exchange for cash or a player to be named later. The Angels optioned Bridwell to Double-A Mobile.
HISTORY LESSON • The walk-off balk for the Bees on Sunday marked the first game in franchise history to end on a balk. That covers a span of 3,310 games and includes 150 walk-off wins and 107 walk-off losses.
What's next • The Bees will begin an eight-game road trip and start a four-game series in Sacramento at 8 p.m. MDT Tuesday. —
