Murray • Baseball coaches tend to worry about every little detail, even when their team sends 16 players to the plate and scores 11 runs in the first inning.

So Murray coach Marce Wilson was not sure how junior pitcher Easton Brinton would handle that big of a lead in a game the Spartans needed to get the inside track on a Region 6 title.

He didn't have anything to worry about as Brinton recorded 10 strikeouts and gave up just two hits to lead Murray to an impressive 12-1 victory over Olympus on Friday at Ken Price Park.

The victory gave the Spartans a 2-1 series lead over the Titans and the edge in a current tie for the league lead.

"When we scored 11 in the first inning, he went out and kept competing to put up zeros," said Wilson. "Some pitchers get lax in that situation and let them get back in the game. Olympus is a good team with good athletes who can come back."

Brinton pitched out of a jam in the first inning, getting a bases-loaded strikeout.

Then the Spartan offense went to work, scoring 11 runs. A two-run double by Drew Staley and a two-run single by Jayden Sinju were the big hits in that early rally that all but put the game out of reach.

Olympus, which earned a 7-3 victory over the Spartans on Thursday to even the series after falling 12-2 to Murray on Monday, got its only run in the top of the fourth when Nick Wankier singled, went to second on an error and scored from third on another error.

"Our offense is really good," said Brinton. "It's been good the whole year. We struggled against Skyline and lost the series, but Drew Staley came out with good offense. … I was feeling good."

As a coach who worries, Wilson is taking nothing for granted. He has series left against Judge and Hillcrest, both of which can be dangerous.

"It's good to get a win from a good team," he said. "We let one get away from us yesterday. We beat a good team."

He said Brinton pitched well, especially when throwing a curve ball. Because Brinton also catches, the Murray coach said he watches his junior star carefully to make sure he is healthy enough to pitch when scheduled.

The junior hurler looked plenty healthy Friday as did the Murray offense. —
