State colleges: Utah softball team topples top-ranked Arizona, 6-3

The Utah softball team earned its first-ever victory over a No. 1-ranked team, beating Arizona 6-3 on Friday at Dumke Family Stadium.

Utah's Bridget Castro had three hits, including an RBI triple, and Anissa Urtez had a two-RBI triple to lead the No. 14-ranked Utes (27-8, 9-4) at the plate.

Arizona's Taylor McQuillan, who entered with a record of 13-0, allowed all six runs on eight hits in 32⁄3 innings as the Wildcats fell to 13-1 and 41-2.

Utah's Miranda Viramontes (11-1) notched her fifth complete game of the season, throwing 118 pitches while allowing just one extra base-hit.

Utah State 4, Colorado State 0 • In Fort Collins, Colo., Paxton Provost went 2 for 4 with a home run to lead the Aggies to the win. USU starter April Brown held the Rams scoreless on three hits over six innings as the Aggies improved to 27-9 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain West.




Utah Valley 2, Seattle 1 • In Orem, freshman outfielder Caragh Morris drove in the winning run with a single in the bottom of the seventh inning, after she had hit a home run in the fifth, to lift the Wolverines to the victory.

Weber State 13, Portland State 0 • In Ogden, the Wildcats pounded 25 hits in their five-inning victory.

Baseball

Utah 16, California 8 • The Utah baseball team scored 11 runs in the second inning and defeated California 16-8 at Smith's Ballpark to clinch their Pac-12 series.

Utah (14-16, 5-9 Pac-12) had 19 hits on the day, led by a 5-for-6 game from freshman second baseman Oliver Dunn, who drove in four runs. Dallas Carroll had three hits with two doubles and two RBIs, and DaShawn Keirsey Jr. tied a school record with two triples.

Utah's 11 runs in the second inning came off of eight hits, with seven Utes batting twice in the inning. The Utes also took advantage of four walks in the frame. Zack Moeller hit an RBI double in the inning, and Dunn had a two-RBI single.

The teams are scheduled to wrap up their series with a game starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Smith's Ballpark.

BYU 7, Pepperdine 2 • In Provo, first baseman Colton Shaver hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning, and the Cougars topped the Waves in the West Coast Conference game. Tanner Chauncy and Keaton Kringlen each had two hits and an RBI for BYU.

BYU starting pitcher Brady Corless (5-0) earned the win, holding Pepperdine to two runs (one earned) on seven hits over eight innings, with nine strikeouts.

Men's tennis

Pepperdine 5, BYU 2 • In Malibu, Calif., BYU's Jacob Sullivan beat Pepperdine's Stefan Menichella 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles match, and Sam Tullis beat Gabriel Sidney 6-3, 7-6 in the No. 6 singles match for the Cougars' points in their West Coast Conference loss.

UCLA 4, Utah 2 • In Los Angeles, Utah's Dan Little beat Martin Redlicki 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles match, and Parker McGuiness rallied to beat Austin Rapp at the No. 5 spot, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, but No. 7 UCLA prevailed.
