Boys’ soccer » Lone Peak downs American Fork after being behind early.

Highland • The Lone Peak boys' soccer team fell behind to American Fork by two goals in the first half but surged back to tie the score late in regulation and then got the golden goal in overtime to beat their crosstown rival 3-2 Wednesday afternoon.

The Cavemen came out the aggressors and it paid off in the first half when junior forward Nathan Mumford was able to convert goals from two crossed balls that were deflected but not covered.

The Knights started fast in the second half. Six minutes into the half, Tyler Gundred's attempt was tipped away, but Justin Jones was right there to convert the rebound.

"Knocking that one in early in the half settled us down," said Lone Peak coach Mark Graham. "The boys looked at each other and said we have plenty of time, but as it turned out, it was just barely enough."

The Knights put heavy pressure on the American Fork goal, especially in the final 20 minutes of regulation, but the defense held up under the onslaught.

It took until stoppage time for the home squad to break through with seconds left. Senior Logan Beus served in a ball that bounced loose in the box for a few moments before Caleb Hanssen was able to get a head on it to even the score.

It took three minutes in the extra stanza for Gundred to capitalize on another loose ball in the box to get the game-winner.

"Logan was able to get the ball to me and I knew I had to turn and shoot it," Gundred said. "It didn't go exactly where I thought it would, but I feel lucky and blessed to get the goal in a rivalry game like this."

He added that American Fork's fast start was a bit of a wake-up call.

"They're a really good team and they came out strong," Gundred said. "It shocked us to fall behind like that, but we kept telling each other that we weren't done. I tried to give the game my all for my teammates, and they gave it theirs."
