Salt Lake Bees pitcher Troy Scribner tossed five scoreless innings in his season debut, struck out seven and didn't give up a hit until there were two outs in the fourth inning to lead the Bees to a 4-3 win over the Sacramento River Cats in front of an announced crowd of 3,863 at Smith's Ballpark on Thursday night.

Three of the Bees' runs came in the second inning on an RBI double by Tony Sanchez and RBI singles by Matt Williams and Eric Young Jr. They added a run in the fifth after Kaleb Cowart walked, advanced on a hit by pitch, stole third base and scored on a Rey Navarro sacrifice fly.

TURNING POINT: Sacramento rallied to score three runs in the eighth on a three-run home run by Christina Arroyo to make it a 4-3 with one out. Bees relief pitcher Greg Mahle bounced back to retire the next two batters to hold onto the lead.

BEES MVP: Scribner set the tone for the Bees in his first start of the season after flying in on Thursday morning from Arizona, where he had originally been scheduled to throw five innings in an extended spring training game.

HIDDEN HERO: Cowart went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored. His run in the fifth provided the margin of victory.

FLASHING LEATHER: Shortstop Rey Navarro ranged almost onto the second-base side of the bag to snag a grounder and throw out Christian Arroyo to keep the leadoff hitter off base in the fourth inning.

QUOTEWORTHY: "I just didn't know what was happening. With this business, there's so many things that can happen that you literally never know what's going on so there was a little bit of doubt, but I kind of already anticipated a little something like that happening." — Scribner said of not seeing his name on the list to pitch Wednesday in extended spring training.

ANGEL ANGLE: Thursday's originally scheduled Bees starting pitcher, Daniel Wright, allowed three runs on three hits and three walks in four innings in the Angels' 8-3 loss to the Texas Rangers on Thursday night.

HISTORY LESSON: Scribner made his Triple-A debut against Sacramento, last night's opponent, on July 30, 2016. He threw a complete-game shutout in that outing.

NEXT: The Bees wrap up their four-game series with Sacramento on Friday night at Smith's Ballpark.
