Murray • Youthful exuberance often casts a positive spin, no matter the circumstance, but even Murray senior Drayden Ricks was pretty sure he wasn't going to get another opportunity in overtime like the one he just had.

But, lo and behold, another chance came not even a minute later. This time, Ricks kicked in the winning goal and the Spartans came away with a 3-2 overtime win over Skyline to stay perfect in Region 6 play.

"I thought that was going to be my only opportunity and I would have missed it," Ricks said.

That first try for Ricks and Murray (9-0, 5-0) came in the 92nd minute as the Spartans and Skyline (4-6, 3-2) scored all of the previous goals in the first half. On a solo breakaway, Ricks tried to chip past Eagles keeper Tommy Jensen, but Jensen got his right hand on the ball.

That was just enough to slow down Ricks' shot and allow a Skyline defender to race back to kick the ball away.

But Ricks didn't miss on the second chance, shooting past Jensen in the 93rd minute of play to end the game.

"It was a pass toward the (Skyline) defender and the defender just whiffed on it. I ran in and got the trash," Ricks said. "I just kept going on my run and a quick little pass into the corner (of the net)."

Both of Ricks' tries in the second 10-minute overtime period came shortly after Skyline almost won the game.

An apparent score by Jake Jensen though was waved off as a foul had been called on the Eagles just before Jensen's kick — just 50 seconds before Ricks got his first open look opportunity.

"With that emotional breakdown, all the team is upset at the ref and all that kind of thing, you have to turn around and defend the ball," Skyline coach Shawn Kennedy said. "I thought Murray played an outstanding game. They came back and did a great job of moving that ball around.

"We just couldn't contain it, that last shot," Kennedy added.

The game for Murray started on the fast track as Beamer Wilcken scored only 30 seconds into the contest.

Skyline's Garrett Powell tied the score at 1-1 when he headed home a long pass from Sam Burningham with eight minutes left in the first half.

Ricks, after a foul was called on the Eagles, converted a penalty kick in the 34th minute as Murray regained the lead. That immediately went away, however, when Skyline's Jonas Torgersen got an open look from the right and scored to knot the game at 2-2.

But defense adjustments were about to come.

"On both sides," Murray coach Bryan Demann said. "Shawn over there is a good coach and he changed up his formation a little bit. We watched them before and they did a good job of possessing in the midfield.

"They were playing more of a long-ball style of play and we were caught a little bit by surprise," Demann added. "They put more pressure on the midfield and that's been our strength."
