BYU senior first baseman Tanner Chauncey lit the fuse two batters into the game, and the explosion rocked the Utes for several innings. After the Utes did pull within a run, the BYU offense blew up for four more runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach.

The Cougars collected 13 hits on their way to an 11-6 win over Utah at Smith's Ballpark on Tuesday night. The win in the nearly four-hour game stopped a two-game losing slide for BYU (11-11). The Utes have lost three in a row and five of six.

Utah (10-12) gave up seven runs in the first two innings, including four runs allowed by freshman left-hander Jacob Rebar in one-third of an inning. Utah pulled within 7-6 after a three-run fifth inning, but BYU struck for four more runs in the top of the ninth.

The Utes racked up 16 hits in the loss, but did not score after their three-run fifth inning. Utah coach Bill Kinneberg was disappointed that his team stalled after bouncing back from what he called a "disastrous" start.

"We were swinging the bats well," Kinneberg said. "We got a lot of hits, but not much to show for it. That's been our M.O. for the last three weeks. We've put baserunners on, but we haven't got that key hit. That's killing us right now. Instead of scoring two runs, we're leaving three guys on base. That's got to change."

Chauncey went 3 for 5 with two doubles and three runs scored. Brock Hale, Kyle Dean Keaton Kringlen and Bronson Larsen had two hits apiece in the win.

Hunter Simmons went 3 for 4 with two runs scored for the Utes. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. went 3 for 6, while Oliver Dunn and Zack Moeller also had two hits. Dallas Carroll scored two runs.

Rebar gave up one run by the time he'd made it through the first third of the lineup. A leadoff walk, a double by Chauncey and an RBI groundout by Daniel Schneemann pushed the game's first run across.

The Cougars tacked on three more runs in the inning, including one that scored on a wild pitch and two more on a double to right-center field by Bronson Larsen. Larsen's double marked the end of the abbreviated outing for Rebar.

Chauncey came into the day batting .208. He also kick-started the four-run ninth inning for the Cougars with a leadoff double.

"Top of the lineup … if they're rolling everyone gets rolling," BYU left fielder Keaton Kringlen said. "It's just a momentum builder. It's huge in those middle and later parts of the game."

Zack Moeller's two-run single with two outs in the bottom half of the first put the Utes into the scoring column and cut the deficit in half.

The Cougars added two unearned runs with the help of an error and a passed ball in the second. Brennon Anderson reached on an error, advanced to third on a single by Chauncey and scored on a passed ball. Chauncey scored on Keaton Kringlen's two-out RBI triple.

The Utes got one run back on Oliver Dunn's RBI triple, which also came with two outs, to pull back within 7-3 going into the third inning.

The Utes pulled with one behind a three-run fifth inning thanks to a sac fly by Dominic Foscalina and a two-run pinch-hit single by Wade Gulden with two outs. However, their offense went cold and the Cougars ignited once more in the ninth.
