Lehi • Skyridge cracked the code against Alta's stingy defense and stayed perfect in its inaugural season with a thrilling 3-2 Region 7 boys' soccer victory in a battle of unbeatens on a blustery Friday afternoon.

Dalton Gibson scored two goals six minutes apart, Bennett Rios scored his first goal of the season and the Falcons' defense made the lead hold up in the first meeting between the two schools.

"It's good for our school," Gibson said. "We're a new school, and it's good to beat one of the best teams. We knew it was going to be a tough game. We had to play our style and if we did, we'd have a good chance of winning."

Skyridge improved to 7-0, 4-0 in region play and became the first team to beat Alta (5-1, 3-1), which had surrendered one goal in its first five games.

The gusty wind played tricks on senior goalkeeper Adam Teerlink, and led to two goals. With Skyridge playing into the wind in the first half, Rios sent a floating shot on goal that Teerlink misread. The ball bounced off the keeper and back toward Rios, who buried the rebound to tie the score in the 17th minute.

Gibson scored on a play that began as a corner kick in the 33rd minute, then scored the eventual game-winner on a free kick from the top of the goal box. The sophomore lofted the ball into the breeze and over the keeper's outstretched arms.

"The conditions were what made the game interesting," Skyridge coach Jerry Preisendorf said. "We had four goals scored into the wind and one downwind. I would have never expected that.

"We played our game. We wanted to keep everything on the ground and keep it simple. Short, quick passes. And we did that for that 12-, 14-minute span in the first half."

Dylan Heaton scored the game's first goal in the seventh minute and Jett Sollis tallied his fifth of the season in the 52nd minute to draw Alta close.

But Skyridge turned away a few opportunities in a frenetic final 10 minutes, highlighted by goalkeeper Andy Witt's diving stop on Alec Groathouse's point-blank header on the game's final play.
