Highland • The Lone Peak baseball team scored two runs to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning and held on to beat Lehi 2-0 in the Region 4 opener Tuesday afternoon.

Until the sixth, the Knights' Payton Freeman and Pioneers' Drew Zimmerman had dominated. But in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lone Peak center fielder Seth Corry drove in third baseman Payton Barney with a two-out double. First baseman Eli Norman then sent Corry home with a sharply-hit single, his second hit of the game, to boost the advantage.

Freeman made quick work of Lehi in the top of the seventh with the help of his defense to secure the victory.

"I felt good out there," Freeman said. "I've been having some issues with my arm lately, but I was hitting my spots and had my off-speed stuff working for me today."

His teammates also gave him a hand in a well-played defensive game by both squads. Each team only registered a single error.

"Good defense always helps," Freeman said.

So did getting those runs.

"When we're ahead, it's always easier on the pitcher," he said. "It takes the pressure off and I can be more relaxed on the mound."

Corry had the advantage all pitchers do when he comes to the plate, as he has a better chance of being able to anticipate what the opposing hurler is going to do.

"They'd been pitching me with curveballs and changeups the whole game," Corry said. "I knew a curveball was coming and he hung it right over the plate.

"It still feels good to come through though, especially against a great pitcher like (Drew) Zimmerman," he added.

Zimmerman allowed only one hit through five innings before Lone Peak struck on offense. Corry said this result will give the Knights some confidence going forward.

"We're still learning how good we really are," he said. "A win like this reminds us that we're always in the game." —
