UC Davis' opening haymaker didn't knock out the Utes — not quite.
But the visiting Aggies did open Friday night's WNIT game with a salvo that left Utah trailing 10-0 in less than three minutes, forcing a timeout and leaving Utah off-balance for the rest of the evening.
It was that kind of game for the Utes (16-15), who finished their season in the first round of the postseason at the Huntsman Center, unable to come back from that initial punch in a 72-62 loss.
Coach Lynne Roberts seemed unable to quite put a finger on why her team was so off its game in that first quarter, which she called "discombobulated." Perhaps it was the 15-day layoff from the Pac-12 tournament, which also was a first-round exit for the Utes. Malia Nawahine and Paige Crozon both called it strange, with Crozon, the team's only outgoing senior, saying, "I don't have the answer there."
