Las Vegas • Utah Valley University is hoping better health will help the Wolverines salvage their season in the Western Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament.

UVU is the No. 6 seed, facing No. 3 Cal State Bakersfield in Wednesday's quarterfinals (8 p.m. MST) at Orleans Arena. The Wolverines finished seventh in the WAC with a 3-11 league record, topping only 0-14 Chicago State. But they moved up one spot in the seeding, due to Grand Canyon's NCAA transition period.

Utah Valley was missing center Sam Lubcke and guard Mariah Seals due to injuries Feb. 16 in a 55-39 loss at Cal State Bakersfield. With those two players in the lineup, the Wolverines took the Roadrunners into overtime Jan. 21 in Orem, before losing 63-59. Lubcke, who missed four games, returned in Saturday's 65-55 loss at Seattle to conclude the regular season.

Lubcke, a junior college transfer, was named to the WAC's All-Newcomer Team. Junior guard Taylor Gordon, who averages 14.0 points and leads the WAC with 75 steals this season, made the all-conference second team.

Bakersfield center Jazmyne Bartee also made the second team.

UVU is looking for another quarterfinal victory after beating Missouri-Kansas City last March for the program's first win in the WAC tournament since becoming a conference member in the 2013-14 season. —
