Richfield • When it comes to basketball, Layton Christian Academy is a great example of it takes a village to form a team.

The Eagles, who won the Class 2A boys' state title with a 59-41 victory over Salt Lake County private school Waterford on Saturday night at the Sevier Valley Center, have only two players from the United States on their roster.

As is befitting for a school with students from 28 countries, Layton Christian's boys' team had players from Venezuela, Rwanda, Chile, Brazil and Australia on the squad.

It doesn't seem as though it would be easy to blend together a team with many different languages and cultures, but veteran Eagles coach Bobby Porter has done just that.

"I have been coaching for 37 years," Porter said. "The more team building things that you do, the more people learn to trust."

Layton Christian looked unbeatable for much of the state title game despite Porter needing to shuffle in a number of subs beause of foul trouble.

None of this mattered because Layton Christian built leads as big as 21 points in the second half and never really was threatened.

It was hard to believe that these teams split their regular season Region 14 series, with Waterford winning the last one just a few weeks ago.

Porter used that game as an example. He sat out some key players to discipline them.

"Sometimes, we have to teach life lessons more than just basketball," said the coach, who won his third title with the Eagles. "I blended them by having them trust that I am going to be consistent in what I do."

Starting with a 9-0 run to end the first quarter and start the second, Layton Christian was ahead by double digits much of the way.

Pedro Silva was the only player in double figures with 12, but 10 Eagles scored. Christians Gutierrez hauled in 10 rebounds.

It was total domination by an interesting group of young men representing different countries and cultures who have learned to work together.
