Richfield • Emery got more than it might have bargained for in Friday's nightcap as it held off gritty Beaver 34-32 to advance to the Class 2A girls' basketball title game at the Sevier Valley Center.

This was a far different Beaver team than the Spartans beat 48-30 earlier in the season.

The Spartans' only loss came in early December against North Summit, and they really hadn't been tested much.

They were tested Friday.

Beaver went on an 8-2 run late in the fourth quarter to tie it at 32-32 and had a chance to win it at the buzzer. It ultimately was Emery sophomore center Megan Jensen who hit two free throws with 43.7 seconds left that proved the difference.

"The coach repeated that we have to get our free throws, that free throws are going to win it," said Jensen, who finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, four blocks and two assists. "So I got it into my mind I was going to put it in."

Not many Emery free throws went in. The Spartans shot 45.5 percent from the line in the game and hit just 3 of 13 in the second half.

"Beaver is a heck of a team," Emery coach Lynn Tuttle said. "We haven't been tested many times. They [the Emery team] fought harder in the last two minutes of the game than they did in the last 30."

Beaver was led by Abbey Yardley with 11 points and seven rebounds.
