Boulder, Colo. • The Utah basketball team has suspended the player who has made the most starts for the team this season.

Freshman wing Devon Daniels, 18, did not travel to Colorado for Utah's game against the Buffaloes on Thursday evening and has been suspended indefinitely, according to a terse release from Utah athletics hours before the tip-off.

"Devon Daniels has been suspended from the team indefinitely, due to conduct detrimental to the team," Utes coach Larry Krystkowiak said in a release, which added he would make no further comment on the matter.

The 6-foot-5 freshman has so far made a splashy rookie debut for the Utes, averaging 10.4 points a game, 4.8 rebounds and shooting 57.5 percent from the field. The Michigan native who spent a year at Prolific Prep in California, Daniels was an immediate entry into the starting lineup, and missed only one previous start this year (which Krystkowiak said was for being late).

Making the start in Daniels' stead was senior guard Gabe Bealer

Utah (17-10, 8-7) came into the week already wounded, having lost four straight road games and five of its past eight games. Among the frustrations Krystkowiak aired in his press conference this week were mental errors and communication.

Also in the starting lineup

The Utah starting backcourt has been maliable in the past few weeks, but with Daniels sitting out, the Utes kept their other two guard spots consistent.

Both senior Lorenzo Bonam and junior JoJo Zamora made their second straight starts in Boulder after both had returned to the starting rotation in Corvallis, Ore. While Krystkowiak said earlier in the week that he didn't believe that continually starting gave anyone momentum, he said he would see the next few days in practice to decide who would start.

Bonam has started 25 games this year, while Zamora has started 16. Both sophomores Parker Van Dyke and Sedrick Barefield — who started at Oregon — came off the bench.

Briefly

Thursday's game was televised on ESPNU with a remote crew, Roxy Bernstein (who has called several Utah games live this year) and analyst Corey Williams. … Making an appearance was Spencer Dinwiddie, a Colorado alum who plays for the Brooklyn Nets.
