Ogden • Jordan played very well for three quarters against powerhouse Lone Peak in the Class 5A boys' basketball quarterfinals at Weber State University on Wednesday.

The second quarter did not go well.

The Beetdiggers actually outscored the Knights by a combined three points in the first, third and fourth quarters, but Lone Peak absolutely owned the second quarter, shutting out Jordan 13-0 to build what proved to be an insurmountable lead in its 65-53 victory.

"Maybe Junior Jazz, that's about it," Knights guard Steven Ashworth said when asked if he ever had participated in a game where his opponent failed to score for an entire quarter. "They're a great team, so for us to come out in that second quarter and not let them score was huge for us."

Win the second quarter by 13 points? Win the game by 12 points. That's one way to do it.

"We kind of went with a different group, and they did a really good job defensively," Knights coach David Evans said. "That's remarkable. I don't know if I've ever been a part of a game that zero points [were] scored."

Lone Peak (22-4) topped Jordan (15-11) in points in the paint (36-22), points off turnovers (20-8), second-chance points (16-4), fast break points (9-3) and bench points (10-6), so it wasn't as if the Knights were outplayed by any stretch of the imagination, but they had to work for the win. Lone Peak has won 15 straight games against in-state competition.

Steven Ashworth led the Knights with 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

"He's more confident than almost anybody I've ever met," Evans said about Ashworth. "He steps on the court and thinks he's better than everybody, and he may be. He's just that kind of kid. I think he's got a big basketball career ahead of him."

Joshua Christensen led the Beetdiggers with 15 points.

The Knights' win sets up a semifinal showdown against Copper Hills, which dispatched Layton with relative ease. The Grizzlies walloped the Knights 74-59 in last year's quarterfinals.

Many of the current Knights struggled in that game, which sets the stage for redemption.

"I think they're a good team," Evans said about the Grizzlies. "I think it'll be a good game."
