Orem • Even if you have the name, it doesn't necessarily mean you have the game.

But in the case of Indiana "Indy" Hanson on Monday night, he was just as cool as a certain movie character, helping the Jordan Beetdiggers oust Fremont 66-55 in the first round of the Class 5A boys' basketball state tournament.

The sophomore guard scored 18 points as well as drawing the assignment of stopping Fremont's Saxton Morby in the second half as the Beetdiggers pulled away after intermission.

"I thought it was a different perspective coming and playing in a big arena like this," said Hanson, who confirmed afterward that he indeed was named after cinematic hero Indiana Jones. "We just needed to settle down, get into our rhythm and shoot the ball the way we can."

Morby led all players with 26 points, draining a variety of off-balance shots in the first half for the Silver Wolves.

As the second half started, Jordan (15-10) renewed its emphasis on limiting the Fremont (12-9) senior standout.

"I knew we had to guard No. 2 [Morby]. We got smart, he got tired and we changed who guarded him," Beetdiggers coach Trace Bevell said. "Indy Hanson, our sophomore point guard, guarded him in the second half before he got into foul trouble."

Hanson eventually did foul out, but not before doing critical damage to the Wolves offensively as well.

Fremont led 35-27 after a putback by Morby early in the third quarter. But consecutive 3-pointers by Hanson ended a 10-0 run that also included a 3-pointers by Isiah Jackson to put Jordan up by two.

After a tying bucket by Fremont's Owen Stewart, the Beetdiggers scored eight more in a row for a 45-37 lead with 2:30 left in the third quarter.

"I think they just wore us down a little bit with their depth," said Fremont coach Corey Melaney, whose team was playing without regulars Zachary Taylor and Kaden Argyle. "We needed somebody else to help out in the scoring column tonight."

But one final charge by the Silver Wolves had to be stymied by the Beetdiggers. An eight-point lead dropped to four in the last minute after two free throws by Taig Nielsen and a score from Baylor Harrop.

And Fremont was threatening for more after forcing a turnover before Jordan's Crew Wakley nabbed a Wolves pass, tore off to the other end to score while being fouled. The ensuing free throw for Wakley, who had five steals and 15 points, pushed the score to 62-55 with 34 seconds left.

"Fearless, reckless, out-of-control. He's a warrior. You know, he is what he is," Bevell said about Wakley, who was also the starting quarterback for the Jordan football team.

"Every time we need a steal, he gets a big steal," Bevell said. "He'll gamble at times, but he made a 3 tonight. He's not a great shooter, but he does enought to get us wins." —
